SAN JOSE — San Jose International Airport zoomed to higher passenger levels in May, a hopeful sign ahead of the summer travel season — yet the number of passenger trips through the Silicon Valley aviation hub remains below its pre-COVID record.
The South Bay airport accommodated slightly fewer than 1.06 million passenger trips during May, San Jose officials reported Tuesday.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to see passenger traffic continue to move in this direction,” said Keonnis Taylor, a spokesperson for San Jose International Airport.
Among the encouraging long-term trends at San Jose’s airport: Over the most recent one-year period that ended in May, the travel complex averaged 1.01 million passengers a month, this news organization’s analysis of the airport’s flight statistics shows.
During the 12 months that ended in May, San Jose International Airport accommodated 12.08 million passenger trips.
Even so, the airport still faces a lengthy convalescence to fully recover from its coronavirus-spawned economic and travel ailments.
The passenger totals over the most recent 12-month stretch remain 22.8% below the lofty heights of 2019, when the airport rocketed to a record-high 15.65 million passengers.

Similarly, Oakland International Airport and San Francisco International Airport remain far below their pre-coronavirus passenger totals.
San Jose International’s passenger activity in May was 4.5% higher than the nearly 1.01 million passengers the airport accommodated during the same month a year ago. The May total was also 3.7% higher than the April figure of nearly 1.02 million passengers.
“Serving 12 million passengers over the past 12 months, we are reminded of the resilience of the flying public and grateful for the opportunity to extend our world-class customer experience to even more travelers,” Taylor said.
