Bally Sports Southwest’s parent company, Diamond Sports Group, has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the organization announced Tuesday night.
The move follows the timeline experts have anticipated for months as the regional sports network operator works to restructure its $8 billion debt under Sinclair.
Diamond’s filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas seeks “first day relief” to allow the company to continue day-to-day operations with wages and programming for its 21 regional sports networks across the U.S.
Among them: Bally Sports Southwest, which carries the local broadcast for Mavericks, Stars and Rangers games each season.
“DSG expects that its Bally Sports regional sports networks … will continue to operate in the ordinary course during the Chapter 11 process,” the company said in a press release, noting it maintains approximately $425 million of cash on hand to continue funding business during the restructuring.
The Mavericks and Stars’ finish the regular season in mid-April, and Bally Sports Southwest carries Mavericks playoff games only through the first round.
The Rangers’ first Bally Sports broadcast of the 2023 season will be a March 20 exhibition against the Cleveland Guardians.
Fans still bemoan streaming access issues.
Bally Sports channels remain unavailable on Hulu Live, YouTube TV, Dish and Sling TV. FuboTV recently joined DirecTV Stream as the lone independent streaming options that carry Bally Sports Southwest.
Sinclair also debuted the single-channel Bally Sports+ subscription this fall to allow viewers access their local RSN for $19.99 a month, or $189.99 annually before taxes.
