Former England star stuns Sky Sports panel with selection of Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold played in midfield for England on Friday night as the Three Lions beat Malta 2-0 ahead of their final Euro 2024 qualifier in North Macedonia.
Controversial opinions are nothing new for Danny Mills, but his views on Trent Alexander-Arnold stunned even his Sky Sports colleagues.
The former England full-back was part of the four-man panel football saturday In which the ideal England XI was debated ahead of Euro 2024 next summer. And the topic of a third midfielder became the subject of fierce debate alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
But Mills sparked debate by suggesting not only that the Liverpool player should not be in the starting eleven, but also not be in the final squad for Germany. And he argued that new Tottenham signing James Maddison represents a better alternative to Gareth Southgate.
“You’ve got Trippier, Walker, Reece James, guys who can play different positions,” he said. “Then suddenly you ask who do you play with in midfield?
“You’ve got Cole Palmer, you’ve got Maddison, Bellingham, Grealish, Gallagher, where does Trent play in that midfield? You can’t play him. For me there’s Maddison there. He doesn’t make my team, he’s not my team. Makes it, Trent.”
His ideas clearly surprised Tim Sherwood and his colleagues. The 25-year-old has won 22 caps for his country, and Southgate’s decision to deploy him in midfield has been credited with his revival at international level.

And Sherwood himself directly disagreed with Mills, saying: “I think Trent will get the pass. He’s incredible. If you’re Harry Kane and getting forward it’s ideal. And he gives us a set- “Grind gives options.”
At club level, Jurgen Klopp opted to utilize the academy graduate at the end of last season, and he starred in the 6–1 defeat of Leeds at Elland Road. But since then he has taken a rightful back seat to his side with the Reds and has made 10 appearances in the Premier League this season.

With England having already booked their place at Euro 2024 next summer, a real indication of Southgate’s intentions could come on Monday when they travel to North Macedonia. With Bellingham unavailable, Alexander-Arnold was deployed in the engine room for Friday night’s 2–0 win over Malta.
