CROSS COUNTRY
The North Idaho Distance Project took 43 runners and produced two national championship teams and five All-Americans from the USATF National Cross Country Championships on Dec. 10 in College Station, Texas.
The NIDP age 13-14 boys, led by Wyatt Carr (sixth place out of 416 finishers), Mitchell Rietze (12th), Gabriel Heule (46th), Brayden Osterdock (53rd) and Ronan Kennedy (55th), won a national team title.
The NIDP age 9-10 girls, led by Summer Dance (15th out of 283 finishers), Finley Taylor (28th), Charlotte Carr (55th), London Dance (69th) and Vivian Howard (113th), won a national team title.
Vivian Howard, London Dance, Finley Taylor, Summer Dance and Ashlyn Brazle were all members of last year’s girls age 7-8 team that won a national championship, when the program was called North Idaho Cross Country (NIXC).
NIDP’s five All-Americans (top-25 finishers in their respective age groups) are Talia Bonville, 10th place in 15-16 age group; Helen Oyler, 24th place in 13-14 age group; Summer Dance, 15th place in 9-10 age group; Wyatt Carr, 6th place in 13-14 age group; and Mitchell Rietze, 12th place in 13-14 age group.
“It’s a very dedicated group of kids and they all ran with heart this weekend,” NIDP head coach Emry Carr said. “We unfortunately had some sickness and a few injuries but all in all, they performed extremely well on the biggest stage. It’s hard to see the season come to a close but if it has to, that is the way to go out. Thanks to the families, coaching staff, and sponsors that keep this club going.
“With the victories and All-American honors this weekend, this club has now had 75 All-Americans, four individual titles, and four team titles,” Carr added. “Not bad for a little town in North Idaho.”
