With apologies to World Cup fans (and those following football, basketball and hockey and the various quadrennial Olympic sports), baseball is special. It is America’s national pastime, a tradition of history and heroics, of victories and vanquishments, of statistics and sweat.
It’s not just a game. It’s part of the country. And, while we truly love the Mets (and dearly miss the Dodgers and Giants) the Yankees are New York. The greatest team, in the greatest sport, in the greatest city. Their pinstripes. Their stadium — although no longer an original like Wrigley and Fenway — will alway be the House that Ruth built. And most of all, their players.

And now the man who followed Yankees legends Babe Ruth and Roger Maris as the only major league players to ever legitimately smash 60 or more home runs in a season, Aaron Judge, will remain a Yankee for good, agreeing with the club to a new nine-year contract, keeping him in the Bronx until he’s 39. Congratulations to Judge and the team on the deal. It’s a perfect way to cap a season that will never be forgotten.
Judge’s 2022 season was phenomenal on top of phenomenal, as Americans everywhere followed his progress gaining day by day on Ruth (60) and Maris (61) from April until October, with his mom and Maris’ son sitting together in the stands. He played in 157 of the 162 games, becoming the all-time season home run king at 62. Judge also led the American League in RBIs and was close to being the league’s batting champion as well, with a .311 average. Even though the Triple Crown eluded him, he was deservedly named the Most Valuable Player.

With that winning record, with that winning personality and that winning smile, how could he not stay a Yankee? Fret no more, Judge will be blasting homers in the Bronx and around the country for a long, long time, adding to Yankee glory.
