Why Travel + Leisure magazine ranks VT the top spot for winter sports

Vermont has been named the top winter sports destination in the United States by Travel + Leisure.
The magazine cited Vermont’s variety of outdoor activities, range of ski areas and cultural attractions as factors in its decision, according to a community announcement from the Vermont Ski Areas Association, also called Ski Vermont.
Travel + Leisure highlighted Vermont’s offerings, including alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities. The article also mentioned the state’s communities, food and local character, specifically noting ski areas such as Magic Mountain, Saskadena Six, Jay Peak and Stowe.
“Recognition like this does a great job highlighting why people visit Vermont each season — winter is something to celebrate,” Ski Vermont communications director Bryan Rivard said in the announcement.
Rivard added, “Visitors don’t have to be skiers or riders — it’s a great place to snowshoe, ice skate, visit local shops or relax by an outdoor fire. There’s something for everyone.”
The ranking comes as winter travel remains strong and interest in snow sports continues to grow nationwide.
“Hopefully this encourages some new visits to Vermont this season,” Rivard said. “It only takes one time to get hooked.”
Vermont topped the list ahead of Alaska, Maine, New Hampshire and Minnesota.
