Why Michigan football will leave early for West Coast trip to USC

One year after Michigan football’s first trip to the West Coast as part of the Big Ten went sideways, the Wolverines are changing its strategy.
In 2024, Michigan left the day before its afternoon game as always when traveling. Coach Sherrone Moore felt the team looked a bit slow in the 27-17 road loss to Washington in Seattle that began a 1-4 tailspin over the next five games.
While he made clear this year’s team is not last year’s team, Moore will not take any chances for history to repeat itself.
“We’re going to leave Thursday,” Moore said Monday, Oct. 6, at his weekly news conference in Schembechler Hall. “Last year, the West Coast trip to Washington, we felt like (we were) a little groggy, (had) a little slow start. The guys played well, but felt like we needed a little more time.
“I talked to a lot of different people during the offseason and, obviously, having (defensive coordinator) Wink (Martindale) here with his NFL background, we’re going to leave Thursday. We’re going to do everything normal on Thursday.
