All the affected people have since recovered, but the reports raise concerns around food safety on Disney Cruise Line’s newest vessel.
As reported by The Straits Times from Singapore, nine people — eight passengers and one crew member — reported experiencing gastroenteritis symptoms after traveling aboard the Disney Adventure during a March 16 to March 19 sailing.
The Singapore Food Agency is investigating the incident, which involved eight passengers and one crew member. Those affected developed symptoms and received medical attention between March 19 and March 20. No one was hospitalized, and all have since recovered.
Gastroenteritis is a condition that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is commonly associated with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever.
The illness can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or other sources of contamination — thus, cases on cruise ships are often closely monitored because guests and crew share dining, recreation, and living spaces in a confined environment.
Instagram user aaandrewkhoo provided some quick math to contextualize the situation better: “Assuming the ship has carried about 50,000 passengers by now (approximately), 9 people contracting gastroenteritis makes it about 0.018%. That’s a pretty good stat if you ask me, haha.”
Others, like Instagram user wirehead quipped, “What kind of Mickey Mouse operation are they running?”
The Disney Adventure is Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship and began service from Singapore earlier this month. The newest vessel in the fleet is currently sailing three and four-night itineraries from Singapore.
The Adventure represents Disney Cruise Line’s first dedicated offering for the Asia region. Onboard themed experiences span Disney properties across Disney Animation, Pixar, and Marvel favorites. You can check out our comprehensive review of the ship here or in the video below.
