Royal Caribbean bans use of ‘smart glasses’ in certain ship areas

Royal Caribbean updated its list of banned items aboard its cruise ships, and it includes the usage of this wearable technology.
The cruise liner has banned the usage of “smart glasses” with audio and video-recording capability in certain public areas of its cruise ships, according to Royal Caribbean.
“‘Smart’ glasses from any of several manufacturers that can record video and audio are not allowed to be used in certain areas onboard the ship, including, but not limited to, public restrooms, Youth Program areas, medical areas, as well as the casino,” the company said.
Royal Caribbean did not specify which brands of smart glasses have been banned.
Those who have smart glasses with prescription lenses are advised to bring glasses that do not have recording capabilities.
Cruise Hive noted that Royal Caribbean recently updated its prohibited items list since the smart glasses ban was not there as of late January.
Have other cruise lines instituted similar bans on “smart glasses”?
Other cruise lines have also instituted similar bans against smart glasses.
MSC Cruises instituted a smart glasses ban in its most recent prohibited items policy.
“Devices capable of covertly or discreetly recording or transmitting data (e.g. smart glasses) are not allowed in ships’ public areas,” MSC Cruises’ policy stated.
While both cruise lines have banned smart glasses in public areas of their ships such as casinos, public restrooms and spas, the cruise lines stopped short of instituting a complete ban on smart glasses.
