Renowned actress Nicole Kidman filed for divorce from singer Keith Urban this week after 19 years of marriage.
Urban is the second marriage for the 58-year-old Kidman, who was previously married to actor Tom Cruise from 1990 until their split in 2001. In the wake of her latest relationship trouble, a comment Kidman made during her divorce from Cruise is going viral.
In August 2001, six months after Kidman filed to end the marriage, she appeared on “The Late Show With David Letterman.” The longtime late night host asked the Academy Award winner how the divorce was going.
“Well, I can wear heels now,” Kidman quipped, making light of the height disparity between herself and Cruise.
Most internet databases list Kidman as 5-foot-11 and Cruise at 5-foot-7, though often those measurements should be taken with a grain of salt. Regardless, she was and is clearly taller, and seemingly proud of it.
Kidman, Urban done after nearly two decades
Fast forwarding to now, and Kidman’s reason for wanting to divorce Urban is “irreconcilable differences,” according to reports.
“Sometimes relationships just run their course,” said Page Six, citing a source that also claimed Kidman “did not want the separation and was trying to save things.”
TMZ, which first reported the news, says the couple had been separated since the summer, and echoed Page Six’s reporting saying Kidman did not want the split.
Kidman and Urban share two daughters together, Sunday and Faith, ages 17 and 14. PEOPLE reported that one of the reported points of contention in the marriage was Kidman’s return to acting.
“Now when they are older, [Sunday and Faith] love seeing their mom work. They are very supportive of their mom,” a source told PEOPLE, adding that “it’s been the opposite” for Urban.
“Keith was used to her being supportive of his career. He’s not been as supportive as she hoped,” the source also said.
Recently, Urban raised eyebrows when he changed one of the lyrics of his song “The Fighter” to mention Maggie Baugh, a rising country singer who has been performing alongside him at recent shows.
Urban originally wrote the song, released in 2017, about Kidman.
