Mayor Adams to travel to the Dominican Republic to mourn nightclub roof collapse

Mayor Adams is planning to travel to the Dominican Republic early next week to mourn the tragic Santo Domingo nightclub roof collapse that killed 221 people and left over 150 injured.
The city’s Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, who is Dominican, will also go on the two-day trip. New York is the city with the largest Dominican population outside of the Dominican Republic.
“Mayor Adams is making the trip to express heartfelt condolences and support to the families who are grieving, including many New Yorkers and their loved ones who have been directly affected by this tragedy,” the mayor’s office said in a release.
A spokesperson for the mayor did not immediately release details about what he’ll do there and if others are also joining on the trip.
“Like all [trips] that have a city purpose, this will be paid for by the city,” Kayla Mamelak, the mayor’s press secretary, said in a text.
The roof collapse on Tuesday claimed the lives of hundreds and has sent the nation into mourning.
Among the dead are former MLB players, a governor, musicians and many with ties to New York, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities have ended their rescue operation and are looking into how the roof came down on the crowd during a merengue concert.
Adams will leave on Sunday and return to New York on Tuesday. The trip his marks the first time the mayor has traveled internationally since his indictment on charges he illegally accepted travel benefits and other perks in exchange for carrying out political favors for agents of the Turkish government last fall.
The charges, which Adams has denied, were dropped last week.
