In the Baltics, a cruise comeback

Curious to explore unfamiliar places, we booked a 10-day “Baltic Autumn” sailing to seven Baltic countries aboard Oceania Cruises’s Sirena in late September. Our voyage opened our eyes to the dramatic changes taking place in this strategic maritime region, where thickets of modern construction cranes often outnumber ancient church steeples and town hall spires.
An estimated 4.3 million passengers took Baltic cruises in 2024, according to Cruise Baltic’s projections.
STOCKHOLM ─ After languishing for decades, the Baltic countries have dusted off their fusty image as a second-rate travel destination and are now one of the hottest tickets in the international cruise market.
We embarked on our cruise in Stockholm, whose imposing brick-and-stone royal palace stands as a symbol of Sweden’s pivotal political role and former military prowess in the Baltic area.
