Liverpool and their Fenway Sports Group owners are not ruling out a blockbuster January signing to bolster their ranks, according to a report.
The Anfield club rarely miss with their big investments following a string of successful signings. Way back at the start of Jurgen Klopp’s era, Sadio Mane proved a fantastic addition.
And such success has continued to arrive, with Luis Diaz hitting the ground running after his arrival from Porto last January.
Liverpool continued to refresh their attack this summer with the initial £64million investment on Darwin Nunez. As for 2023 additions, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham is a reported top target.
The race for him, which could amount to £131million, will hot up towards next summer’s transfer window.
According to Football Insider, though, Liverpool could yet land a massive new signing in January.
Indeed, the Reds have supposedly set aside funds in case Klopp finds a player he wants to sign. Klopp has a tendency to wait for his top targets, but FSG are making plans for Klopp to latch onto a signing in January instead.
It remains unclear how much FSG have reserved for Klopp’s potential transfer plan. However, the report claims a January addition could be an ‘A-list’ one.
Liverpool preparing Jude Bellingham deal
As well as talk of a January deal, Football Insider says that Liverpool are ‘laying the groundwork’ for a Bellingham deal.
A transfer for the 19-year-old England star would likely be a British record one, overtaking Jack Grealish’s £100million move from Aston Villa to Manchester City.
And it would certainly be a record transfer at Anfield, with Nunez potentially taking that record at £85million if his add-ons come to fruition.
While Liverpool spent big for Nunez this summer, deals for their other signings came relatively cheap.
Former Fulham midfielder Fabio Carvalho was a smart acquisition, with the Reds not paying much for ex-Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay either.
And on deadline day, Liverpool signed Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo on loan with an option to buy.
Where could the Reds sign next?
As for where Liverpool could make a signing next, it is surely the midfield they have to address.
Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara have proved stalwarts and still regularly start. However, they are advancing through their thirties and they will soon need replacing. James Milner is in the same boat.
Meanwhile, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are spending the final year of their contracts out with injury.
Arthur’s arrival looks like being only a stop-gap for much more of a statement midfield signing, either in January or next summer.
As well as their clear midfield issues, Liverpool have refreshed their defence and attack well.
Up front, Diaz and Jota are in their mid-twenties, with Nunez turning 24 in June. Mohamed Salah turns 31 in the same month, but he keeps himself in peak physical condition.
And in defence, Ibrahima Konate’s arrival last summer and Joe Gomez’s new contract have put concerns over new signings in that area on the backburner for a little while longer.
