City issues travel advisory as winter storm threatens middle of workweek

The New York City Office of Emergency Management issued a weather alert for Wednesday, Feb. 25, warning residents that overnight freezing temperatures and light snow during the morning commute could create slick roads and black ice.
A fast-moving clipper system is forecast to pass through the city Wednesday between approximately 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Light snow is expected, with rain possibly mixing in after 6 a.m.
The total accumulation is expected to range from a half inch to one inch by late Wednesday morning.
The light snow forecast for Wednesday comes as crews continue cleanup operations across the city following a historic storm that dropped more than two feet of snow in parts of New York City earlier this week.
“The city is working around the clock to get New York City fully back on its feet, but with light snow expected Wednesday morning, we’re encouraging New Yorkers to travel with caution and look out for their neighbors in need,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“Allow yourself extra time for morning commutes, leave more distance between vehicles and wear proper footwear when walking.”
NYCEM Commissioner Christina Farrell urged residents to take precautions ahead of the morning commute.
“This week’s storm brought historic snowfall to New York City, and while we’ve made significant progress clearing our streets and restoring services, we’re not out of the woods yet,” Farrell said.
“We’re expecting light snow during the Wednesday morning commute, which could create dangerous conditions on roads and sidewalks. We’re asking New Yorkers to limit unnecessary travel, plan for extra commute time and stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC.”
Temperatures are expected to drop to around 30 degrees Tuesday night before climbing to the low 40s Wednesday.
