CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The South Carolina Ports Authority and Carnival Cruise Line agreed to not extend the cruise contract back in May 2022 and this week, this decision will officially go into effect.
Leaders with SC Ports say that this partnership has made a great impact on the maritime industry, but this decision was made in hopes to free up Union Pier Terminal for redevelopment.
Officials with SC Ports say that the area will still have some port-of-calls for the time being, but a permanent decision has not yet been made.
This means that some cruises will still dock in Charleston for a day-visit, but no ships will begin or end in the area.
The Carnival Sunshine will return to Charleston for the last time this Saturday.
While it is still unclear what exactly will be replacing the area, Ports Authority representatives say that it will ultimately be redeveloped in conjunction with the local buyer, city and community.
