Sky Sports pundit Dharmesh Sheth has declared that Brighton are desperate to keep in-demand midfielder Moises Caicedo this month, despite interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
The 21-year-old has put in some admirable performances this season and has been key to the Seagulls’ early success, who currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League table.
It would be a huge blow for Brighton to lose one of their most important players mid-season, but with three giant clubs circling, they may have to turn down some sizeable offers to keep their man.
Brighton are believed to have slapped a huge £75m price tag on Caicedo, in an attempt to ward off interest in their star man. However, Chelsea in particular are still pushing for a winter deal.
Despite this, speaking on the Sky Sports Transfer Show, Sheth declared that the Seagulls have absolutely no interest in selling him, at least for now.
Sheth said: “Brighton don’t want to lose Moises Caicedo or Alexis Mac Allister at all, but we’ve consistently said throughout this window that there is huge interest from Chelsea and they haven’t given up on signing Caicedo this month.
“Brighton have no interest in selling him, they don’t have to sell and they’re under no pressure to sell. We’re being told that what Chelsea are willing to pay now and what Brighton value the player at – even though they won’t make that public – isn’t in the same ballpark.”
January Caicedo sale makes no sense for Brighton despite growing interest
Indeed, it would not be a smart move for Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi to let one of his most important players leave mid-season, even if he could command a huge transfer fee.
As mentioned, Brighton currently find themselves in seventh place in the league table after a phenomenal start to the campaign.
The Seagulls have picked up impressive wins against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, with Caicedo often being key to their excellent performances.
Operating generally from a defensive midfield position, the Ecuadorian is an aggressive player, with the energy to also play as a traditional box-to-box man.
Brighton could still sell Caicedo for mega-sum next summer
This season, Caicedo has made the second-most fouls in the division, as well as being in the top five for successful tackles in the opposition’s half, which suggests he could be a real asset to any team that adopts a high press.
In terms of goal contributions, Caicedo has scored one goal and created one so far, but he generally looks a threat when he gets the ball close to his opponent’s penalty area.
With that in mind, it’s unsurprising to see so many top clubs vying for his signature. Jurgen Klopp is reportedly a huge fan of Caicedo, while Chelsea have already launched an official enquiry into the midfielder.
Arsenal are also looking for midfield reinforcements to bolster their squad for their title push, but given this recent update, it seems all three teams will have to look elsewhere, at least until the end of the season.
Indeed, Caicedo is under contract at Brighton until 2025, so they are under absolutely no pressure to sell him this month. But, they could still command a huge transfer fee next summer if the Ecuadorian keeps up his excellent form.
