Taron Egerton proves he would be a worthy action movie hero successor to Tom Cruise in his new Netflix film Carry-On. In Carry-On, Egerton plays Ethan, an airline security guard who gets blackmailed by a mysterious man into letting a suitcase containing a dangerous weapon pass through security unchecked. In addition to Egerton, the cast of Carry-On includes Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, and Dean Norris.
The new Netflix movie may start as a thriller, but the second half of Carry-On turns into an action film. Instead of turning a blind eye to the suitcase that contains a deadly nerve agent called Novachik, Ethan disobeys the Traveler and attempts to save the day by alerting the authorities of the threat. Ethan’s desire to save the day leads to several action set pieces in the second half of Carry-On. The intense action in Carry-On allows Egerton to prove that he is an action star comparable to Tom Cruise.

While Carry-On is almost entirely set at Los Angeles International Airport, Egerton’s character runs around the entire airport over the course of the movie. The amount Egerton runs is very noticeable throughout the movie, and his running form is very similar to Cruise’s. Egerton’s runs through LAX in Carry-On can feel very over the top at times, as Cruise’s running sometimes feels in his movies. However, it completely makes sense as Egerton’s character is literally running to save the lives of hundreds of people.
Even though Egerton’s character in Carry-On is not portrayed as nearly as invincible as Cruise is in a lot of his movies, he has a lot of the same charm.
Cruise has earned a reputation for the way he runs in the Mission: Impossible series and his other action movies. Cruise always runs like a man on a mission to save the world (which is usually exactly the case). Even though Egerton’s character in Carry-On is not portrayed as nearly as invincible as Cruise is in a lot of his movies, he has a lot of the same charm. Overall, Egerton gives a very impressive action movie performance in Carry-On, and it is clear he should appear in similar films moving forward.

Carry-On is one of Taron Egerton’s best movies, and proves he should be a bigger star. While he has had quite a successful career, Egerton should be one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Egerton is perhaps best known for his role in two other critically-acclaimed action films, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kigsman: The Golden Circle. However, it’s surprising that the Kingsman movies weren’t a bigger launch pad for Egerton’s career.

Egerton was celebrated for portraying Elton John in the 2019 film Rocketman, but it still feels like he should be cast in more projects. Many fans have expressed their desire to see him play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so perhaps Carry-On will be the movie that convinces Marvel Studios to give him the part. Regardless, Egerton’s upcoming movies are even more exciting after the success of Carry-On.
