Summer road trips should be like a rainbow when you reach the end of it there should be a pot of gold. If you are looking for a fun road trip, and you are already heading up the Fargo/Moorhead area, I’ve got a fun little detour with a sweet surprise for you to try.
Just about 30 miles to the North of Moorhead sits the tiny town of Hendrum. Hendrum at the time of the 2020 census, had a population of 289, but don’t let that stop you from seeing this surprise. You’ll have to travel to the northeast corner of town, to an old elementary school. Inside you’ll find a candy shop!
Sugar Mama Bakery and Catering took up residence inside the old elementary school, and they not only have some homemade sweet treats, but also some lunch fares as well.
The owner, Dena Katherine Bishop, posted about her shop in Quirky Minnesota Places on social media.

Looking to add a destination on your Summer Road Trip List? Just 28 miles North of Moorhead on the King of Trails Highway 75 you will find the tiny City of Hendrum. And just a few blocks off of the highway sits the former Elementary School that is now home to Sugar Mama Bakery and Catering LLC . We have a variety of treats, Pies, breakfast, Sammiches, gifts, art, and more. Play one of our board or card games while you enjoy a meal or tasty treat.
The building is also home to several businesses and one of Minnesota’s top 10 most Beautiful Gyms.
I’ve never really been to Northwestern Minnesota before, but it’s on my bucket list of places to see and explore in the next 5 years, and I’ll make sure to add Hendrum as a place to stop and see.
Sugar Mama’s is located at 320 Main St East in Hendrum, and their phone number is (218) 861-6070. You can head to their Facebook page for their hours, which can vary by the day, here.
