EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – While the weekend is starting off tranquil, weather conditions will dramatically change as we shift into Sunday. Impactful snow should hold off until about noon Sunday, so it would be best to complete any errands or travel needs before then. While there may be patches of light snow in the area Sunday morning, they should be insignificant. Once into the afternoon however, the snow is expected to fill in and become moderate to heavy. Weather conditions will deteriorate and travel will start to be impacted, especially once we head into the late afternoon and beyond. A First Alert weather day has been declared from noon Sunday until noon Monday, when the greatest impacts from the snow and wind will occur.

The snow is part of a large storm system that will track through the Central Plains while intensifying. The low center will then head towards the northeast, eventually crossing Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. This ultimately puts much of our area on the warm side of the track. Southeast winds will increase on Sunday which will gradually allow temperatures to rise near and above freezing. As this occurs, a transition to rain will take place from south to north Sunday night into early Monday morning. This means the lowest snow amounts will be in our southern counties, while northern areas will likely end up with several inches.
Several inches of snow can be expected in the Chippewa Valley with the greatest totals to the north/west. (weau)
Expect some big impacts to travel starting Sunday afternoon, with the worst conditions into Sunday night. Roads will become snow covered, especially once the sun goes down, and with strong southeast winds, visibility will be significantly reduced. Temperatures hovering near freezing will make for a heavy, wet snow that will cling to most surfaces, weighing down tree limbs and powerlines. Thus, scattered power outages will be possible. Conditions will improve into Monday as most of the area will see just rain, but the storm will not completely exit our area until sometime on Tuesday.
