What travelers can expect flying for the holidays at the Charleston Airport

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Friday between Christmas and New Year’s Eve can make for a chaotic travel day at the airport.
Here’s what you can expect flying out of the Charleston International Airport as of Friday morning. Everything appeared to be smooth sailing. There weren’t too many lines at check-in or security.
The delayed arrivals at the Charleston airport could be a combination of different factors.
A few locals said they were a bit surprised to see how quiet it was earlier today.
“Everybody kind of likes the midday mid-morning flights, so it wasn’t too bad this morning,” traveler Shawnta Williams said.
Traveler Kelly Hedrick agreed.
“It seems somewhat empty, the woman next to me said the same thing too, she was shocked. And then I was afraid I was jinxing it, but hopefully its all easy breezy until we get to the gate,” Hedrick said.
The Hedrick family says they have a routine when it comes to traveling around the holidays.
“Exactly what we did today, so have half the family get dropped off, drop off all the bags. The other two, usually the two of us, will go drop off the car and meet up and go through TSA-pre, which is a God-save–and allow extra time, always allow extra time, just in case,” Jason Hedrick said.
Another traveler compared his travel experience to earlier this week when he flew in from New York.
“Big long queues, up and down, snaking up and down. It took about an hour I guess to go through security, but here now it’s empty. Obviously, not many people moving today,” traveler Malcom Watson said.
On Dec. 27, 2023, the Charleston International Airport saw a 28% increase in comparison to the year prior.
At this time, there aren’t official numbers, but an airport employee said it looks to be about the same as the 2023 holiday season. Triple A expects to set a new record this holiday season with 7.85 million people flying to and from their destinations across the nation.
Despite the crowds or lack thereof, The Charleston International Airport still encourages you to plan ahead, arrive early and stay informed.
