Travel outlook: Mild Christmas in store for majority of the US

Nearly three dozen cities could see record warmth on Christmas this year, as a very mild holiday is expected across the nation.
A large area of upper-level high pressure is building this week, allowing temperatures to climb and weather-makers to remain across southern Canada and the northern U.S.
High temperatures in the 70s and 80s are forecast from Colorado to Missouri to Texas. Kansas City, Mo., could see its all-time warmest Christmas on record with a forecast of 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
The good news about the warm weather is that the impacts from travel because of a winter storm look low.
The exception will be the West Coast, where a strong atmospheric river and storm system will bring heavy rain and mountain snow to the region.

Warm air begins to build across the Southern Plains and Southwest. Heavy rain remains possible for parts of California and the Pacific Northwest. Quiet weather can be expected across much of the East.
Tuesday, December 23
Temperatures are already running well above seasonal normals for the middle of the country, with highs in the 70s and 80s. Showers and light snow are possible in northern New England.

West Coast
Much of the most inclement weather will be on the West Coast, where another atmospheric river will bring torrential rain, heavy mountain snow, and gusty winds, making all modes of travel difficult.
Flash flooding is possible throughout most of California and even as far east as Phoenix. Expect delays at the airports and on the roads if your travels take you there this week.
