A new feature reveals that Tom Cruise partially directed a key battle in an upcoming Star Wars movie. This is Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, slated for release on May 28, 2027. Set roughly five years after the sequel trilogy, Starfighter will follow a pilot in a galaxy far, far away, who must protect his young nephew and embark on a dangerous mission, navigating a rebuilding galaxy.
Star Wars: Starfighter’s cast is led by Ryan Gosling, also including Matt Smith, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Daniel Ings, and Flynn Gray. Starfighter wrapped filming in December 2025, going into post-production before it releases approximately a year after Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (May 22, 2026), the next cinematic installment in the genre-defining franchise.
In an interview with The New York Times, director Levy shared the story of Cruise working on the production.
