Road closures planned for Beaufort Co. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — Events honoring the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday across Beaufort County are expected to impact travel times and prompt road closures.
Starting at 10 a.m. Monday, the Hilton Head MLK Committee for Justice will be holding its annual memorial march in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Hilton Head Island.
The march will begin on Wilborn Road at Hilton Head High School, where it will head west on William Hilton Parkway before turning left onto Museum Street. It will then turn left onto Main Street before turning right back onto Wilborn Road and ending at Hilton Head High School.
During the march, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office will be closing parts of Wilborn Road, westbound William Hilton Parkway, Museum Street and Main Street to keep participants and spectators safe.
In Beaufort, the city will be hosting its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. Road closures are scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m.; the parade will start at 10 a.m.
The parade will follow the traditional route with a detour because of construction. The parade will start on Boundary Street and turn onto Carteret Street, Craven Street, Newcastle Street and Bay Street before ending on Bladen Street. During the parade, the Woods Memorial Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic.
In Bluffton, the Bluffton MLK Observance Committee will be hosting a community parade and march.
Lineup is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. outside Bluffton Town Hall on Pritchard Street. Then, at 2:15 p.m., the march will go through Old Town Bluffton. The route will move from Bridge Street, to Calhoun Street, before ending at Ma Daisy’s Porch on May River Road.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents and visitors to exercise caution when traveling on Monday. Drivers should seek alternate routes in areas affected by road closures.
