COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – No child chooses to end up in a hospital.
But, when admittance day comes, Child Life Specialists with Prisma Health work to make the transition easier. One way they do this is by giving patients choices where possible.
One specialist, Gayatri Reddy, demonstrated this with a former patient, Dawson. “Do you want to put it on your head, or would you like me to put it on your head,” she asked. Dawson, eager to demonstrate his skills, reached for the surgical cap. “I want to put it on,” he said.
The surgical cap features some of Dawson’s favorite characters, The Ninja Turtles. Caps like these are the foundation of Child Life’s surgical cap program for hospital patients.
It works by volunteers around the country creating and donating caps with various designs on them. From standard designs to iconic characters, and logos of various sports teams, the goal is to have a variety of caps any child can enjoy.
“Being able to help the child ease their anxieties, as well as the parents’ anxieties, it’s so rewarding,” explained Reddy.
Reddy says that oftentimes, tension is physically visible in new patients. By introducing them to the cap collection and allowing them to choose their favorite one, the tension begins to alleviate.
The CAPtivating program began in 2008, and the initiative is one Prisma doesn’t take for granted. The Child Life Team says it’s always accepting cap donations.
“I just want to thank our volunteers, we are just so grateful for every cap we receive at Prisma Children’s Hospital Midlands.”
The hospital says it is looking to expand the program to other Prisma locations in the Upstate and in Sumter.
Information on how to participate or donate can be found online.
