McCarthy says next Congress’s success hinges on present House: ‘Don’t be taking vacations’

Former Rep. Kevin McCarthy suggested the House get to work sooner rather than later.
McCarthy appeared on Sunday Night in America to react to the results of the 2024 election, which favored his party. When McCarthy was a congressman and Speaker of the House, the lower chamber of Congress had a 222 majority, which he predicted this next Congress would approach despite the fact that some seven races have yet to be called.
“The most important thing for the next Congress to be successful, it’s how you finish this Congress,” McCarthy advised. “The more they get done early before President Trump is sworn in, don’t be taking vacations. Don’t be taking time off. Get those bills done. But more importantly, finish this year with all of the funding issues prior to going in for President Trump.”
Trump has promised to sign several executive orders after his first days in office. In addition to brand new orders, he plans to reverse the 94 executive orders President Joe Biden signed during his first week in 2021 that reversed Trump’s immigration policies.

McCarthy stepped down from his seat in December 2023 and was replaced by Rep. Vince Fong (R-CA). Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) took his place as speaker.
As of Monday morning, Republican House members had successfully filled 214 seats, with 218 needed for a majority. Democrats had 203 seats in their favor.
