MLB sends out a strong message through a harsh punishment
Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen went too far when they chose to obstruct a crucial play featuring Dodgers star Mookie Betts. Sitting near the right-field wall at Yankee Stadium, one grabbed Betts’ glove and ripped the ball out of his hands as he jumped into the front row to make a spectacular catch off a fly ball from Gleyber Torres. The other held onto Betts’ right hand, preventing him from finishing the play.

The outcome? Both were immediately thrown out of the stadium and had their tickets for Game 5 canceled, in addition to Torres being called out for fan interference. The Yankees lost the World Series against the Dodgers in five games, despite winning Game 4. Hansen and Capobianco now face a far harsher punishment. MLB expressed the gravity of the issue in a letter released to the public on Friday. This type of interference “posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player,” the letter said.

Capobianco and Hansen have been barred from all MLB stadiums, offices, and facilities for an undetermined period by officials. The two are prohibited from attending any MLB-sponsored activities. Additionally, if they are seen at any MLB event or location, they will be banished and might even get punished for trespassing. Too severe? Perhaps. But, at least, now, it would be evident how supporters are expected to behave when they go to a game. What do you think?
