Clemson basketball beats Morehead State, avenges 2023 NIT

CLEMSON — For nearly two years, Morehead State was synonymous with a bad memory in Littlejohn Coliseum.
After the Tigers’ NCAA tournament bubble burst in 2023, they were dumped, at home, by the Eagles in the first round of the NIT.
But on Nov. 11, 2025, Clemson (3-0) got the better of Morehead State, 83-56, in a non-conference matchup. It wasn’t exactly a pretty game, featuring just above 40-percent shooting from the Tigers for most of the contest.
On the glass, the Eagles were better, taking 41 rebounds to Clemson’s 40.
Still, the Tigers didn’t let disaster befall them, eventually pulling away. RJ Godfrey led the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Utah transfer Jake Wahlin added 14. Ace Bucker registered a third straight game with double figures off the bench with 11.
Key stats
Clemson continues to share the ball well and not turn it over. After producing 25 assists to just three turnovers against Gardner-Webb, the Tigers had eight helpers to just error in the first 20 minutes versus Morehead State; they finished with 19 assists to five turnovers.
Clemson had some issues, however, finishing with the basketball. There was a roughly seven-minute stretch of the first half where the Tigers scored just seven points and hit three of 13 shots from the field.
Likewise, it wasn’t a good day for some of Clemson’s top scorers. Nevada transfer Nick Davidson, who had 28 points in the Tigers’ first two games, was just 1-of-6 shooting to finish with six points. Dillon Hunter was just 2-of-7 for five points.
Turning point
There was a stretch in the second half where Clemson hit nine of 11 shots, including a couple of buckets from Utah Valley transfer Carter Welling, a baseline cut and dunk by freshman Chase Thompson, and a timely 3s from Hunter, Wahlin, and Jestin Porter.
That grew the Tigers’ lead from 59-41 to 80-51.
Next game
Clemson will hit the road for the first time to play Georgetown on Nov. 15 in Washington, D.C.
