Ava Ziegler, Chambersburg sweeps winless Colts in dominant fashion

CAMP HILL — Chambersburg volleyball needed a victory in a big way against Cedar Cliff Thursday night.
The Trojans only Mid-Penn Commonwealth victory heading into Thursday was a 3-1 win over Altoona. In a loaded division every game is important, and the Trojans answered the call.
The trip from Chambersburg was well worth it as the Trojans (4-2, 2-2 Commonwealth) walked out of Cedar Cliff’s gym with a convincing 3-0 sweep of the winless Colts (0-7, 0-5 Commonwealth).
“(Commonwealth victories) are very important to us,” said Chambersburg setter Ava Ziegler. “It shows that we as a team are coming back from our previous losses, and we’re going to keep getting better.”
Chambersburg and Cedar Cliff started out slow, but the Trojans turned it around and cruised to its second Commonwealth victory of the season.
Score summary
The stars
Ziegler has been a pinpoint passer throughout her career as she approaches 1,000 career assists. Thursday she had another day at the office with 17 assists.
Kasey Moser, Kaylie Stull and Lexi Poe led the defensive effort with 13, 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
How it happened
The first set was a bit sloppy on both sides. Neither team hit the ball well and the serve-receive game struggled.
However, the Trojans committed less mistakes leading to a 25-17 set victory.
Chambersburg cleaned up their mistakes and an outstanding passing performance from Ziegler helped the Trojans dominate the second second set en route to a 25-9 victory.
“She makes everybody on the team better,” said Chambersburg head coach Ty Frelin. “From our passers to our hitters. Her placement of the ball is very spot on.”
The Trojans rode the momentum they built in the second set all the way through the third set for a 25-13 victory.
Big picture
Chambersburg gets a big win in the Commonwealth. They’ll need all the wins they can get as they go up against the likes of Central Dauphin, State College, Mechanicsburg and Cumberland Valley.
After making the District 3 playoffs in 2024, this is a developmental season for the Colts. The losses of Madi Bogovic and Joan Olson have affected Cedar Cliff greatly. They are continuing to find themselves and the connection it takes to be a successful team.
They said it
“We’re trying to get the girls to communicate more and keep the energy up the whole time. They’ll miss a few points and the energy kind of goes way down. So we’re working on that and just building a connection with the team.” – Cedar Cliff head coach Ashlan Houser on the Colts performance.
“I think we all worked really hard to communicte and work together as a team. We really played for each other and instead of trying to get stats for ourselves, we all worked to be one team.” – Ziegler on what allowed the Trojans to be successful against Cedar Cliff.
