COLUMBIA, S.C. — A new bill in the South Carolina legislature aims to legalize sports betting, creating a state-run system that sponsors say could generate more than $13 million in tax revenue.
South Carolinians who want to bet on sports online through platforms like DraftKingz or FanDuel right now can simply do so by driving over state lines to North Carolina, one of more than 30 states to legalize sports betting.
The proposal faces opposition from Gov. Henry McMaster, who has long opposed gambling in the state.
The bill would allow up to eight entities to be licensed for online sports wagering, with oversight from a state commission. The Commission would be responsible for selecting the entities to distribute licenses to and ensuring the program meets standards outlined in the bill.
Stephen Shapiro, a professor of sports and entertainment management at the University of South Carolina, says the program has brought in millions of dollars of revenue in states that have legalized it, and encouraged more consumer activity for sports.
