Imagine the indoor track and field sports facility at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) in mid-January. For the regulator spectators of high school sports and the watchers from the El Paso community, the famed Mountain Lion Fieldhouse promotes a house full of sporting dramas at this time of the year. The track and field teams from Western Colorado head to UCCS to compete in the leagues. This year was no exception. On January 25, UCCS hosted the Colorado Running Company UCCS Invite. Several athletes entered the contest, eyeing the qualifying standards for the 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships. Things went by smoothly but not for long
On Sunday, Jan 26, Mountain Lion Fieldhouse witnessed something terrifying. Things reached such a level that the university officials had to intervene to bring stability. Not only the university officials, but the entire track and field community came down to address the incident. Here’s what happened.

On January 26, a user uploaded a photograph of a statement released by UCCS. Per the statement, someone attending the club sports event in UCCS’s indoor facility succumbed to a fatal accident. The report claimed, “A hammer thrown by a participant cleared certified barriers and stuck him [the deceased individual]. No one from the UCCS community was directly involved in the accident, and no one else was injured.” Meanwhile, the UCCS chancellor came forward with a sad note.
In her statement, Jennifer Sobanet, the chancellor, wrote, “We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved.” Meanwhile, more details about the misfortune have emerged. Regarding the identity of the person who passed away, the press release identified him as a parent of a member of the CO United Track team from Vista Ridge High School. Furthermore, the Colorado police informed that the parent was trying to protect his family, sitting beside him. Reportedly, he lost his life on the spot, right after the hit.
The incident will have anyone shaking. It comes in the list of rarest, according to Keenen Ballage. In his vast coaching experience, he found it hard to remember someone who had meet a similar fate. In his interaction with KRDO13, Ballage said, “It just it doesn’t happen. You know, like I said, this never happens.” But wasn’t there any protective measure around? The track and field community hurled several tough questions at the entire facility on Reddit. Here are a few.
Track and field sports fans do not miss the pertinent questions
Among the track and field sports fans on Reddit, several individuals witnessed the incident on January 26. One among them wrote, “This was seriously traumatizing and there should be more regulations around throwing facilities, as accidents like this, while not common, do happen. If any of y’all end up going to a throwing meet PLEASE EXAMINE YOUR SURROUNDINGS!” As per them, accidents like this are not so uncommon, the fan had only the authority to blame. Meanwhile, someone came forward to explain the arrangements in the venue that day.
The spectator wrote in the comment box, “Instead of using the proper barriers they used a 10 foot high net enclosure used for shot put (again cutting corners) that happens to be right next to the main entrance and the bathrooms, meaning people are wandering to and fro past this area constantly.” At such a close distance it is probable for things to take a turn for the worst. The fans were not done yet.
One such track and field fan penned on Reddit, “UCCS is at fault – they did not have the correct protective enclosures in place.” If the aforementioned arrangement was the actual scene, then the authorities have a lot of explaining to do. The hammer is a 25 lb metal ball, attached to a handle by a wire. So naturally, the throw will take the ball to a larger distance compared to the shot put. Then, the usage of the shot put net should not apply to this sport.
A problem in the fundamentals caused another supporter to criticize the officials strongly. The fan noted, “The saddest part is how easily this could have been prevented with a little common sense from anyone with authority from the coaches to the meet director to the schools administration to the insurance company. This should not have happened.”

Additionally, the seating arrangement was something that also came under attack. According to several fans, it was so close to the actual throwing base. The placement could have been avoided. Ultimately, someone wrote, “New fear unlocked,” watching every bit of the issue. Well, UCCS has yet to publish anything on the matter. The track and field fans will hope for a positive response soon.
