Charleston airport reports smooth Labor Day travel

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston International Airport recorded a few record-breaking holiday travel weekends in 2024 and Labor Day is on track to be a part of another record-breaking travel year.
Travelers bustled through the airport all day Monday heading out after a long weekend in the Lowcountry, and many returning home.
In 2023, the airport saw a record number of more than 6.1 million visitors. The year before, there were about 5.3 million visitors, meaning the airport saw a 15% increase in travelers from 2022 to 2023.
So far in 2024, the airport reported a 27% passenger increase over Memorial Day compared to 2023 and 12% increase over the week of the Fourth of July compared to 2023.
Airport officials say that puts them on track for another record-breaking year of travelers.
Labor Day travelers did have to contend with one less TSA security lane than normal. The airport began installations of an X-ray machine on Aug. 23 and that work is expected to be completed on Sept. 12. The work dropped the total lanes from seven down to six. The airport announced the closure in advance, asking travelers to plan for wait times at security and bring their patience.
While passengers saw a few delays Monday, many flights were leaving ahead of schedule, working to stay ahead of rainy weather across the country.
