EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – We transition from January to February this weekend, and it comes with some welcome changes. After a very cold week with well below average temperatures, the pattern will begin to shift towards more seasonable conditions. A large high pressure system across the Central U.S. will be sliding eastward and into the Midwest, finally breaking down the persistent north and northwest wind flow. We will actually see a shift to the south, allowing for the start of a warm up. If you have errands to run this weekend, today will be the better of the two days to be out on the roads. We can still expect some sunshine around as temperatures rise through the teens. We welcome the final month of meteorological winter on Sunday, and this is when we look to rise back to average! The trade-off will be our first snowfall in more than a week. We have to go back to January 21 to find our last 1″ snowfall in Eau Claire, but as a low pressure system tracks along the Canadian border, it will carry a front through Minnesota and into Wisconsin. Clouds move back in tonight, and the first snowflakes may already be falling by daybreak Sunday. Light snow will then be with us during the day, becoming intermittent at times, before gradually ending into the evening hours. While accumulations look to be light, in the 0.5″-2.0″ range, it should be enough to make for some slick conditions as temperatures rise into the 20s.
Once this front exits the area, we look to dry out again with near average temperatures through much of the first week of February. We could see another chance for some snow showers by next Thursday and Friday. While the new month will be starting off more seasonable, we will have to wait and see if temperatures will take another cold turn, following on the heels of a colder than average December and January. While February does show the first signs of seasonal warming as daylight grows longer, we can still see a decent amount of snow! Eau Claire on average picks up nearly a foot of snowfall for the four week period. In 2019, the city set a new monthly record of more than 53 inches!
