Major cruise line extends ban on visits to this Caribbean country

Royal Caribbean has extended its halt on visits to the company’s private destination in Haiti due to concerns about ongoing violence in the Caribbean country.
The travel company announced in April that it had paused visits to Labadee, a private beach resort owned by Royal Caribbean, located on the northern coast of Haiti. It’s about a six hour drive from the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
It was the second time the company suspended the excursions since 2024.
Now, according to TravelPulse, the company has extended that suspension at least until May 2026. Anyone who bought a trip to the resort has been notified.
“We have been monitoring the evolving situation in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and out of an abundance of caution, we’re cancelling our visit to Labadee,” Royal Caribbean said in a notice to customers. “We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause—your safety is our top priority. We appreciate your understanding.”
Instead, the cruise line will now take travelers to Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos, Nassau, Bahamas, Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel in Mexico, and other destinations. Some cruise liners are just offering an extra day at sea instead.
In July, the U.S. Department of State reissued its most severe travel advisory for Haiti, warning all Americans not to travel to the Caribbean country for any reason, due to kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, civil unrest, and limited health care.
“Haiti has been under a State of Emergency since March 2024. Crimes involving firearms are common in Haiti,” the advisory said. “They include robbery, carjackings, sexual assault, and kidnappings for ransom. Do not travel to Haiti for any reason.”
